Automatic TAFs for Aviation

Short Description

The general aviation is highly dependent on automatic weather forecasting systems. With the Auto-TAF, Meteo Service has installed a system that computes airport weather forecasts automatically and produces special encoded messages (TAFs) from that data. Currently, Auto-TAF is widely used by several national weather services and aviation companies.

Functionality of the Auto-TAF system

Auto-TAF is a special MSwr-MOS based system, designed in accordance to the requirements of aviation, especially of Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts (TAFs). It consists of three parts:

1) TAF Guidance

It is produced each hour and contains detailed probabilistic MOS forecasts for all significant weather phenomena regarding wind, visibility, clouds and significant weather. Very special predictands like 'Probability for total cloud cover below 1.500 feet is 5 Octa or more (e.g. Ceiling below 1.500 feet)' are predicted to serve as a basis for the later generation of short and long TAFs.

Furthermore the detailed information provides a lot of useful information for the airport authorities to optimize the traffic flow. It also allows for better decision making for the airlines regarding the necessary amount of Cerosene at launch.

2) Encoded Auto-TAF

A TAF code generator translates the information of the TAF Guidance into a TAF complying with ICAO regulations. It looks similar to the human-made TAF and contains TEMPO and PROB groups as well. Official verification at Deutscher Wetterdienst over the last 10 years shows that Auto-TAFs continuously have about the same quality level as human-made TAFs on the average.

3) Auto-GAFOR

General Aviation Forecasts (GAFORs) covering about 70 Areas in Germany are generated in the requested format based on the TAF guidances.
